For my project I started by researching the top seven most common sports injuries around the world and I learned about them. I studied how they occur, how to prevent them, the symptoms, and the treatment. I then collected data from the trainer's room here at Belmont Hill and I would see if the most common injuries around the world were the most common injuries here at Belmont Hill.
Goals
The goals of my project were to see if the most common injuries around the world were the most common here at Belmont Hill. I also wanted to grasp a better understanding of the injuries so if I were to ever have one of them I would know right away the treatment and how to prevent it for the future. I predicted that the most common injuries around the world would be more or less the most common at Belmont Hill. I learned a lot about the actual treatment from the trainers at Belmont Hill. I wanted to see how the trainers went about treating people when the room got crowded. I wanted to see how they got the training room under control in order to fulfill the needs of all the injured students.
Discoveries
I learned a great deal about injuries. I furthered my knowledge on how to cure injuries and how to prevent them. I learned that if you do not treat an injury right away, you will be in trouble because the injury will get significantly worse and it will be harder and take longer to get back to normal. My hypothesis was proved to be more or less true with some obvious outliers. From this experience, I learned a lot of things that will help me in the real world and how to handle them. The most common injuries seen around the world from sports in order from most common to least common went: Muscle Pull, Neck Strain, Frozen Shoulder, Lower Back Strain, Tennis Elbow, Runner's Knee, and Shin Splints. The data that I collected was:
Muscle Pull- 6 people
Neck Strain- 2 people
Frozen Shoulder- 2 people
Lower Back Strain- 3 people
Tennis Elbow- 1 person
Runner's Knee- 2 people
Shin Splints- 1 person
Other- 5 people
Challenges
The biggest challenges of my project were getting one on one with the trainers because there were so many people that had to be treated and so many other kids in the room also trying to do their biology project. It was also difficult to find a lot of people with injuries. It is not like everyday thirty kids came into the trainer's room with an injury. The injuries were very limited which is why I wish I went to some other outside places to learn even more about the injuries.
Looking Back
If I were to do this project again, I would definitely start earlier and plan better. I would have liked to get more data to support my hypothesis but it was very difficult because there were not a lot of injuries in that period of time. I would recommend for a person who isdoing this project to visit other trainers too, in order to get more data and more output from different schools.
